December 21st, 2012...12/21/12...The End of the World...or is it?
I love to write about things that could never happen. I love it. Supernatural events. I love to read about it too, just like all of you. I am even currently working on a novel about the beginnings of the end of the world, but I sometimes wonder where we get all of this? I mean, wasn't the world supposed to end a while ago and the guy miscalculated or something?
Remember Y2K? That was supposed to be the end of anything that ran on a computer. We were going back to the Stone Ages, people! Me, my wife, and our entire neighborhood bought the local Wal-Mart out of gallon water jugs (don't judge me, some of you did it too, am I right?) But what happened there? Midnight of the year 2000 came and went and we all went on our merry ways like nothing ever happened. Remember...this was huge news back then. I believed it too. Of course I believed that Malli Vanilli sang all of their own songs and that the Twinkie would always be here with us (I said don't judge me! :) )
We all believed it because we wanted to...we chose to...Everyone seems in an all-fire hurry to see the world come tumbling down around their ears.
In my opinion, some have chosen to believe , because the Mayans didn't choose a big enough stone to create their calendar, that the world is going to end on December 21, 2012. It's a bunch of B.S. It makes engaging fiction. It sold a great movie with John Cusack.But it's B.S.
But hey, maybe I'm wrong...
Maybe these are the last days of this great planet Earth. Maybe we all only have less than a month...What do you think? I sure would like to hear from you. Tell me what you think...Is it all going to end just like that?
In the meantime, I'm going to spend my last couple of days writing...because if the world doesn't end, I need to make my deadline...
Great post :) As far as Y2K, I was really into conspiracy theories at the time and thought we were being lured into some grand scheme of deception to distract us all from...who knows? lol Growing in the very strict religion that I did, we were taught that many apocalyptic events will occur before the end of the world - still waiting on the moon to turn to blood...

DeleteAll I remember about Y2K are the stickers my Aunt gave me of a "Y2K" bug that was supposed to kill my computer. lol I still have those somewhere...
ReplyDeleteAs far as December being the end of the world, if it is...oh well! Not much we can do but continue living our lives and being happy. Life is precious, and so many take it for granted. I highly doubt it is the "true end" though. Like you said Jason, it made a good plot. :)
I would pay good money to have those stickers. But I think you're right. If it's allgoing to go south in less than a month, what do we think we'll do to stop it. Life is precious...live it people! Thanks for joining in Hilybee! :-)
DeleteI am in the camp that believes the generation of Mayans who chipped out that calendar decided their arms were tired and left the dates after December 21, 2012 for future generations to fill in. More recently my son tells me there is a volcano (in Alaska maybe?) set to blow its top in our lifetimes and wipe out the world. We'll see. At least that one seems scientifically viable. But I'm not rushing to Wal-mart for water - won't do any good if you're too dead to drink it!

DeleteSo now they can predict volcano eruption, huh? ;) I actually thought it was sad on the last prediction of the Earth's demise. I watched a program where an entire family had been preparing for this event and then it came and went. People got rid of their pets, sold everything they owned...All because the Mayans got cramps in their hands from all of the chiseling..Of course, if it's all true then I got a lot of explaining to do...
Yeah, that whole Y2K thing--strange, very strange. It was spoken about as though computer programs are immutable. Then again, the UNIX folks seem to have it right in terms of tracking dates. The 2012 premonition is yet the latest in what will no doubt be an endless line of eschatological melodrama. But, hey, one of these days a theory is going to be right, either by luck or, well ... by luck :)

Lol, Jason! Y2K was freaky until it went by without one single glitch. My family has always been big on conspiracy theory.
ReplyDeleteIt's fun to speculate, but I'd rather write fiction than join in with the doomsayers. If the world does end, so what. We won't care when we're dead.
Okay, so that may have sounded a little harsh, but really, I don't want to live my life thinking about death. What's the point. It's going to come for me one day or another, but until then I intend to live my life the way I want. I intend to spend as much time with my family as I can, watch my kids grow up, and grow old with my husband.
Life is about living. There's just no time to worry about things I can't change.

DeleteI think the best way to look at it is this: As unlikely as it sounds, ANY day could be the end of the world. There are far more realistic dangers out there - just ask the dinosaurs. But, the threat of some astronomical apocalypse has never slowed us down, so why should this one?

I was sick recently, and I thought that was the end of the world lol. You're right though. There are more reslistic threats to human existence, like the thought of another Justin Beiber song *shudders* thanks for commenting!
