A Review of Carpe DiEmily by Riley J. Ford

Well, here I am to prove again that I don't have a favorite genre...I just like great characters. This book really proved it to me, once again. I DON'T HAVE A FAVORITE GENRE PEOPLE! JUST SAYIN'. This book proved it in it's awesomeness because romantic comedy is not my genre, but as I have already reiterated, I don't have a genre anymore. LOL! You should all check out this book!

Carpe DiEmily by Riley J. Ford!

Here is a description straight from Ms. Ford's website

Emily Keane has her life all planned out. She’s played by the rules and never stepped outside her box, and now she will finally be rewarded with everything she always dreamed of: a job promotion, a fiancĂ©, and a future she can count on. But when her perfectly planned world falls apart, Emily is plunged into the wildest year of her life.
From the beaches of California to Jamaica, New York, and Europe, Emily finds herself on a madcap race against time, running from an unscrupulous organ broker who wants her dead, all the while checking items off her unusual bucket list. On top of it all, she’s falling in love with the most unlikely person, a man who can never return her feelings . . . but will his friendship be enough?
Confronting one hilarious misadventure after another, Emily finally learns who she really is and how to seize the day . . .

So why did I like this book so much.

Characters: Awesome! So Awesome! If I had one complaint about books by some authors, it's that the characters are all the same. There really is little difference between all of the characters. They get hard to follow. Emily is not everyone else, she spends most of her time with life following a certain set of prescribed rules and never deviating from them. Her neuroses make her the perfect character to fall into the various misadventures of this book. She is hilarious and so, so unsure of who she really is. Great character! Simone is another one that is really a person all of her own. I have met people like her that are so willing to take people at face value and believe in them 100%. Even when they are wrong, they don't hold onto that, and still look at each person individually. One of those free spirits, ya know? All of the characters in this book made it a real joy to read. Bravo Ms. Ford!

Locations: Emily just about goes everywhere int he world in this book and each place that she is goes to is more interesting, with lots of local color to keep it interesting. I really believed that I was in Jamaica, New York, and various locations in Europe! My favorites were Jamaica with Simone, and Pamplona with Tyler! I really felt like I was there in those places! Awesome writing.

Themes: Who are you? Is your life all that you want it to be? If it's not, why not? Should one take the leap to get to know themselves? How do we do that? One should never judge by first glances. Things are never as they seem. Great themes. I believe that it is these themes that elevated this book from just okay to awesome. It is obvious that Ms. Ford thought about these things as she was writing. The great thing is that the themes did what all great themes do...they melted into the story so I didn't really think about hem until I finished the book and was thinking about it after words. This is more impressive than I can put words to.

Altogether, I would recommend this book to anyone that likes romantic comedies, or to anyone that likes well-drawn characters. Such a great book, I don't even know what to say, except give it a try.

#1 The Island Series
'I walk toward the sea. The endless surface of the water extends to the horizon, whichever way I look.
Our world is small. We are on our own, and we only have ourselves to depend on. We rely on the Force deep within us, as taught to us by our forefathers.
If I were to walk westward from here, I would come across a barrier - the Wall. Behind it, there are Fools. At least, that's what everyone says. I have never seen one.'
Leia lives on the Island, a world in which children leave their parents to take care of themselves when they are ten years old. Across this Island runs a wall that no one has ever crossed. The Fools living behind it are not amenable to reason - they believe in illusions. That's what The Book says, the only thing left to the Eastern Islanders by their ancestors.
But when a strange man washes ashore and Leia meets a Fool face to face, her life will never be the same. Is what she and her friends believe about the Island really true?
Or is everyone in their world, in fact, a Fool?

#2 The Island Series
The first memory I have of my grandfather is of a moment that we share together. I'm sitting on his knee looking out over the harbor. Grandpa is smoking a pipe. He points at the horizon.
"Look, Walt. Our ships are out there. And one day, another even more beautiful ship will appear at the horizon. A mighty ship to take us all away. And Annabelle will be at the front deck with open arms, inviting us all to join her on board."
"Why don't we sail to her ourselves?" I inquire wide-eyed.
"Because she promised she would come," granddad replies. "And in that promise we trust. It's only the Unbelievers who think they can do everything themselves. They have no faith in the Goddess."
Walt lives in Hope Harbor, an island community that has put its trust in salvation from across the sea. The townspeople wait patiently, build their ships to sail out and welcome the Goddess, and piously visit the temple every week. Horror stories to scare their children are told about the Unbelievers on the other side of Tresco.
But not all is what it seems. Walt has questions that no one can answer, and when his best friend and cousin Yorrick is killed in an accident, he digs deeper to find out the truth about the origins of Hope Harbor's society... and the secrets of the temple.
Return to the world of The Island and discover what Walt's life was like before and after he met Leia!

#3 The Island Series
‘The world is never-ending.I never realized just how much space there is – how far and wide the water around our island stretches out. Somewhere in the back of my mind, I may have believed that a second Wall ran around Tresco, containing the infinite waters so we wouldn’t all wash over the edge and plummet down into the depths.’
Leia and Walt are on their way to the Other Side, where the legendary land of Cornwall awaits them. Tony, their new friend, has told them that all wars of the past have been forgotten and the citizens of Bodmin and Dartmoor live in peace. People adhere to the tenets of an old religion that preaches forgiveness and non-violence.However, Walt and Leia soon discover that even a peace-loving, ideal society like this one may have its flaws. While on a forbidden trip to Exeter, the old city of their ancestors, the two Islanders discover more about the new world than they ever bargained for.
Secrets run dark and passions run deep in this thrilling conclusion to the Island novella series.

The Extractor by Emily Walker

A detective tries to solve the mystery of disappearances surrounding a dentist who is more horrifying then he could ever imagine.

Review:
"I don't normally read horror so was nicely surprised when I started this one, though I may be a little more alert when I next visit the dentist. A quick fun read that's well written and throws in a few twists and turns to keep it interesting. It's perfect if you don't have a lot of time to read or enjoy horror." - Claire Taylor
