9 Questions Plus One For Rachel Thompson, Author Of Broken Pieces

Meeting people on social media can sometimes be an awesome treat! So it was when I met Rachel Thompson. She is a wealth of knowledge about social media and building a brand, but the best part about her is that she is a kind and generous friend...oh and she loves Friends...did I mention that? She loves Friends...

Today I thought I would interview her, like I always do, about things that people don't ask her and I actually learned several things I didn't already know.

I would like to thank her for coming to my blog.

Here's a little something about Rachel:

Rachel Thompson is the author of the award-winning Broken Pieces, as well as two additional humor books, A Walk In The Snark and Mancode: Exposed. She also owns BadRedhead Media, creating effective social media and book marketing campaigns for authors. Her articles appear regularly in the San Francisco Book Review (BadRedhead Says…), 12Most.com, bitrebels.com, BookPromotion.com, and Self Publishing Monthly. She hates walks in the rain, running out of coffee, and coconut. She lives in California with her family.

Where do you hide when you’re angry or upset and why do you hide there anyway?
I tend to go directly to my computer and write, ear buds in, listening to something loud. I get very, very quiet.

What was your favorite toy when you were a kid?
I fell in love with Raggedy Ann dolls when I was in the hospital for eye surgery at age four or five. I received an Ann and Andy, and my collection grew from there. And yes, I still have many – though some have been damaged or lost (or drawn on with lipstick by my older sister). Just made me love them more which drove her nuts.

Name your two most favorite movies.
Blade Runner: brilliant everything – writing, acting, production, costume, music. It’s hard to go wrong with that movie. And (I’m sure you’ll laugh at this choice), Dodgeball, even though I’m not a huge Ben Stiller fan, this movie makes me giggle every time.

Name one thing in your daily schedule you would like to eliminate for good.
Loading the dishwasher. I make my daughter unload the clean dishes, and then I have to rinse off and load – it’s just a waste of time and kinda icky.

What do you wish we would make more improvements on?
I generally avoid any discussion of politics or religion, but sexual abuse of children is close to my heart. Penalties should be much more severe for these crimes.

What is the one thing you cannot live without?
Coffee.

Do you have a nickname?
Red, Rach – those are the main ones people tend to use.

Name something that inspires you and why does it give you a positive feeling?
I love music. I’ve always been able to pick out a tune on the piano, and I learned how to read music when I was quite young (age 6) through gosh, about 8 years of piano lessons (mostly classical). I’ll listen to or play pretty much anything.

Do you have a best friend? Tell us about him or her?
I have two – one from high school, the other I met at my second sales job. Judy has been married since age 21 to the same guy – she’s a beautiful soul and gets me like nobody else. We’ve had many ‘vodka nights’ together.
Karen also has been married forever, has twin girls (it took 7 years of fertility treatments) and the girls are now 17 (OMG) and talented singers/dancers/actors with straight As – most likely both will get full scholarships to almost any school. Most importantly, they’re good girls – I’m so proud of them.

Tell us about your newest writing project.
I have two going right now: a book on social media and platform building for authors – that’s in rewrites now and Broken Places, the ‘sequel,’ if you will, to Broken Pieces. Similar themes and style: poetry, prose, essays.
Plus the paperback of Broken Pieces just came out last week (I was signed by Booktrope in the fall) so promoting that as well. It’s available everywhere now!

Thank you so much, Rachel, for coming to my blog and telling us a little about you!

Book Summary: Broken Pieces is an award winning book about relationships, a study of women, and a book with heart. Vastly different in tone from her previous essay collections A Walk In The Snark and The Mancode: Exposed, Broken Pieces is a collection of pieces inspired by life: love, loss, abuse, trust, grief, and ultimately, love again. While still non-fiction, best-selling Broken Pieces is not humor at all. In Thompson’s most intensive work to date, she opens her soul and invites the reader in for a visit. Thompson goes into those long buried rooms we lock up deep inside and shares a bit of her soul. Broken Pieces is vulnerable, raw honesty, and no-holds barred.
